Mental Health Facts and Events

Did you know?

According to the Integrated Services of Kalamazoo (ISK) Kalamazoo County Community Health Needs Assessment for Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, “extrapolating national and regional prevalence estimates to our local population can offer a rough approximation of the likely sizes of relevant populations within Kalamazoo County.” See estimates below.

  1. At least 40,000 adults with any mental illness
  2. About 10,000 adults with a serious mental illness
  3. Over 10,000 youth under age 18 with mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral problems
  4. Over 15,000 Adults and nearly 1,000 youth with a substance abuse disorder
  5. About 9,500 adults and 2,500 youth who seriously consider suicide each year
  6. About 1,000 adults and 1,000 youth who experience an actual suicide attempt each year”

The majority of our Kalamazoo County population, as in most other locations around the country, who are experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns, are not receiving any treatment at all.

What does this mean?  You are NOT ALONE.

GET HELP. Talk to your primary care provider and ask if they participate in collaborative care for depression and/or anxiety.  This will provide faster access to the care you need and want, and decrease the stigma of seeking care.

You can also call Gryphon Place Crisis Intervention and Resource Assistance at 269.381.HELP or dial 211 for help.
