Changes, proactive planning continue at WMed in response to COVID-19 pandemic

COVID-19
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the safety and well-being of our communities in Southwest Michigan and the WMed community remain our top priority.

Medical school leaders are continuing to implement changes and proactive measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The steps that are being taken are meant to ensure the safety of our patients at WMed Health, as well as WMed students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff while meeting the healthcare needs of the community and the educational needs of learners.

COVID-19 testing is continuing to be offered at WMed Health on Oakland Drive. The testing is being done through a partnership with NxGen Laboratories. Individuals, current WMed patients or others who have symptoms or wish to be tested can call 269.337.6577 to register, provide insurance information, and to schedule a telephone visit with a WMed Health provider to get a doctor’s order for the test. More information can be found at https://wmed.edu/covid19testing.

Other changes and proactive measures that are being taken include:

  • In compliance with the order issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, face masks are required at all WMed locations. Additionally, WMed will continue with learning and working from home measures through the end of the governor’s stay-home order on June 12, and most likely beyond.
  • The Rapid Response Team is preparing a return to work and learn plan that will be implemented in line with the governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order. We will move forward in a logical and coordinated manner as we want to continue to ensure the safety of the WMed community.
  • Several events, including resident graduations, seminars, grand rounds and professional development sessions have been canceled or postponed through June.
  • The Class of 2020 Commencement on May 16, 2020, was a virtual event. Medical students and graduate students were honored during a ceremony that was shown on the medical school’s Facebook page. For more information, go to https://wmed.edu/graduation.
  • The WMed Health care team continues to provide patient care services using telehealth (video and phone) as well as in-person visits when most appropriate. WMed Health-Mall Drive re-opened to patients on Monday, May 4.
