Drs. Michael Raphelson and Michael  Trexler have each earned the designation of Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). The Academy is the professional organization for physicians who care for patients with serious illness.

Advancement to fellowship status within the Academy honors dedication to -- and scholarship in -- the field of hospice and palliative medicine.

Drs. Raphelson and Trexler will receive the designation during the closing plenary session of the Annual Assembly of Hospice and Palliative Care in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday, March 16, 2019, where they will be joined by 3,300 colleagues working in the field of hospice and palliative care.

The Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM) status is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a physician member. Drs Raphelson and Trexler have demonstrated significant commitment to the field of hospice and palliative medicine, including work with students, residents and the curriculum at WMed, where they serve as clinical assistant professors in the departments of Family and Community Medicine and Medicine, respectively.

In addition to their work at the medical school, Dr. Raphelson is medical director of Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan and Dr. Trexler is the medical director of Palliative Care at Ascension Borgess Hospital.

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine is the only national medical specialty society for hospice and palliative medicine. Since 1988, AAHPM has supported hospice and palliative medicine through professional education and training, development of a specialist workforce, support for clinical practice standards, research, and advocacy. AAHPM’s membership includes more than 5,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals committed to improving the care of patients with serious illness.
