Dr. Melinda Abernethy joins the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WMed

The medical school recently welcomed Melinda Abernethy, MD, MPH, as its newest faculty member in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Abernethy began her new role as an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Urogynecology at WMed on Monday, July 2, 2018. She comes to WMed following a four-year stint as an assistant professor of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she also served as the associate program director of the FPMRS Fellowship.

Dr. Abernethy is an alumna of the University of North Carolina where she earned her MD degree from the School of Medicine and her masters of Public Health from the School of Public Health and in 2007 and 2006, respectively. She completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Michigan in 2011 and followed that up with two fellowships in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center and Northwestern University.

Dr. Abernethy is board certified and a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, she is a member of the American Urogynecologic Society Interstitial Cystitis Research Grant Review Committee, a junior advisor for the Fellows’ Pelvic Research Network of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and American Urogynecologic Society, and an associate member of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.

In her new role at WMed, Dr. Abernethy brings to bear several years of mentorship and clinical and classroom instruction experience, as well as an impressive portfolio of publications and research.
