Biosketch

Akram Alnounou, DO, is an internal medicine resident at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. He received his Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he served as treasurer of the Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association and class representative for the Foundations of Medical Neuroscience course. During his undergraduate studies, he served as a research assistant in the Departments of Endocrinology and Microbiology and Immunology, and as a community health worker in the Department of Pediatrics. He has presented original research on rare neurological complications of alcohol use at multiple regional medical conferences and is a published author in the area of global community health initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked as Clinical Testing Manager and Medical Assistant at Loop Medical Center and Laboratory in Chicago, where he oversaw large-scale testing operations, expanded access to underserved populations, and contributed to public health data reporting. His clinical, teaching, and research interests include cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal morbidities and chronic conditions, and alcohol-related cancers. He is especially passionate about community-focused care and preventive health and is exploring subspecialty training in cardiology or gastroenterology.
