For the last 12 years, Carly Davis, MD, FACOG, has honed her skills as an obstetrics and gynecology physician caring for patients in the Kalamazoo community.

As a member of OB-Gyn, PC, then Bronson OB-Gyn Associates, she has practiced full-scope obstetrics and gynecology care while performing deliveries and surgeries at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She also served as a clinical assistant professor at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) and worked closely with resident physicians from the medical school’s OB-GYN residency program.

After making the decision to shift her professional focus to outpatient gynecology and teaching, Dr. Davis has been named the new residency program director for the medical school’s OB-GYN residency program.

“I really love teaching and I feel like I’ve grown so much since becoming more involved with the WMed OB-GYN residents,” said Dr. Davis, who officially began her duties at WMed on April 1. “I’m invested in their success and the success of the program. I felt like this was a space where I could enjoy a new professional challenge while focusing on the parts of my job I enjoy most.”

In addition to her work with WMed learners, Dr. Davis will see patients one day a week at her gynecology practice in the WMed Health Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic at the medical school’s Oakland Drive Campus.

Dr. Davis graduated from Kalamazoo College in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Health Science. In 2008, she earned her MD degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed her OB-GYN residency training at Trinity St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti in 2012.

Dr. Davis returned to Kalamazoo after residency training where she began her work as an associate physician with OB-Gyn P.C. The practice became part of Bronson Healthcare in 2022 and Dr. Davis remained there until taking on her new role as a residency program director at WMed.

Along with general gynecology, Dr. Davis has additional training in polycystic ovarian syndrome; management of perimenopause and menopause; ultrasound-guided office procedures; trauma-informed pain and anxiety management for office gynecologic procedures; perinatal psychopharmacology; fertility evaluation and ovulation induction; and non-surgical management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Her professional interests include adolescent gynecology, obesity impact on gynecology, resident education and mentorship, and patient-focused medical communication.

Dr. Davis is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Davis joined the WMed faculty in 2016 as a clinical assistant professor. In 2023, graduates of the OB-GYN residency program presented her with the Excellence in Teaching Award and she has also served as a member of the medical school’s OB-GYN resident education and clinical competency committees.

As she steps into her new role, Dr. Davis said she wants to ensure that the OB-GYN residency program continues to grow and strengthen academically with an enhanced didactic curriculum. She also wants to expand the program’s research footprint. Crucial to her goals for the program will be maintaining and strengthening relationships with OB-GYN physician-teachers in the Kalamazoo community, she said.

“I feel like I have a strong starting point for that because of my previous work with residents and perspective as a community physician,” Dr. Davis said. “I’m excited for this opportunity and the chance to be a part of this wonderful program’s bright future.”
