In April, medical school leaders established the new Department of Surgical Services, a move that will bring together faculty from the departments of General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery into one academic department, and allow for a more efficient and unified representation of WMed surgeons with the medical school’s community partners.

Keith Kenter, MD, who previously served as chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been appointed chair of the new department.

“I am very honored to be leading this new Department for the School of Medicine,” Dr. Kenter said. “This is a great opportunity to further our relationship with our hospital partners as it relates to improving surgical care for our community and to optimize our faculty development and surgical education for our medical students and residents.”

Within the Department of Surgical Services, Saad Shebrain, MD, will serve as division chief of the Division of General Surgery and Dr. Kenter will serve as division chief for the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Meanwhile, Yong Li, MD, PhD, will continue in his role as division chief for the Division of Medical Engineering and Gitonga Munene, MD, will continue to serve as division chief for the Division of Surgical Oncology.
