Medical school welcomes two new faculty members to its Department of Psychiatry

The medical school is pleased to welcome two new faculty members to its Department of Psychiatry.

Emily Standish, PhD, started at the medical school on July 31 as an assistant professor.

Dr. Standish is an alumna of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2003. She went on to earn a master’s degree in General Psychology from New York University in 2007. She followed that with a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State University in 2011. Dr. Standish then earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State in 2015.

Prior to joining WMed, Dr. Standish worked as a clinical psychologist at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Portage. There, she provided psychotherapy to adults and treated conditions including anxiety, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and chronic pain. Before joining Pine Rest, Dr. Standish worked as a pain psychologist at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital Southwest in Kalamazoo from 2018-2022. Dr. Standish also worked for more than a year as a clinical psychologist at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center.

Dr. Standish’s clinical interests include the treatment of trauma and chronic medical conditions, including pain.

Meanwhile, Vitaliy Voytenko, PsyD, joined the medical school as an associate professor of Psychiatry on June 30, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Medical Ethics, Humanities and Law.

Dr. Voytenko is an alumnus of East Ukrainian State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems in 1999. He went on to earn a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College in 2005 and followed that up with a post-doctoral fellowship in Psychology from Boston College. In addition, Dr. Voytenko earned a master’s degree in General Theology in 2009 from Wheaton College.

Prior to joining the medical school, Dr. Voytenko worked at Alliance Clinical Associates, a multidisciplinary mental health group practice in Wheaton, Ill. Dr. Voytenko also has worked as an assistant professor and director of Clinical Training at Wheaton College. He also has worked at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids, where he led the development of a depression center of excellence and taught and supervised psychiatry residents.

Dr. Voytenko has held an adjunct faculty appointment in the Division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine since 2013. His research interests include treatment-resistant depression, co-morbid personality disorders, psychodynamic approaches to treatment and religion and spirituality in mental health.
