Medical school welcomes Abigail Solitro, PhD to the Department of Biomedical Sciences

Abigail Solitro, PhDThe medical school is pleased to welcome Abigail Solitro, PhD, to its Department of Biomedical Sciences. 

Dr. Solitro started Jan. 23 as an assistant professor of biochemistry. She is an alumna of Ferris State University, where she earned bachelor of science degrees in biotechnology and forensic biology. She went on to earn her PhD degree in cell and molecular genetics from Van Andel Institute Graduate School in 2018.  

Prior to joining the medical school, Dr. Solitro spent five years at Liberty University, where she was an assistant professor of biology. Dr. Solitro also conducted research there, winning grants of more than $70,000, establishing a cancer-focused research program and managing flow cytometry and cell culture laboratory spaces. Her doctoral research focused on investigating novel therapies targeting autophagy in non-small cell lung cancer.  

Dr. Solitro has worked as a visiting instructor biochemistry at Hope College and biology at Ferris State University.
