Biosketch

Dr. Tom Goodwin is a Primary Care Sports Medicine specialist with fellowship training in Sports Medicine. Originally from Greenville, MI, Dr. Goodwin completed his undergraduate studies at Western Michigan University with a degree in Biomedical Sciences graduating Magna Cum Laude from the Lee Honors College. While at Western, Dr. Goodwin worked with brain and spinal cord injury patients at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Dr. Goodwin earned his osteopathic medical degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. While on campus, Dr. Goodwin spent time in the athletic training rooms gaining insight from MSU’s top Sports Medicine Physicians. Dr. Goodwin completed his residency training in Family Practice with emphasis on Sports Medicine at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI earning recognition from his peers as the intern of the year as well as being named chief resident for his final 2 years of residency. After residency, Dr. Goodwin was selected to complete a prestigious Sports Medicine Fellowship at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. While in residency and fellowship, Dr. Goodwin participated and managed the care and treatment of athletes and patients from the high school to the professional level, including the Virginia Tech, Grand Valley, Aquinas and Calvin College athletic teams. He has also provided medical care for Olympic Athletes, the Grand Rapids Griffins, the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Grand Rapids Rampage arena football team, the Grand Rapids Marathon, the Fifth Third Riverbank Run as well as several other community, collegiate and high school events. He received specialty training in osteopathic manipulation, concussion management and overuse injuries. Dr. Goodwin is the Director of Borgess Sports Medicine and is the head team physician for the Kalamazoo FC soccer team, the West Michigan Mayhem and Mattawan High School. He also serves as a coach for Borgess Run Camp and as the co-medical director for the Kalamazoo Marathon and Borgess Run for the Health of It. Dr. Goodwin has also been involved with the K-Wings and Junior K-Wings professional hockey clubs. Dr. Goodwin is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic Academy for Sports Medicine. He currently sits on the Governor's Council for Physical Fitness, Health, and Sport. He also regularly lectures locally and nationally for these organizations.
