Akram Alnounou, DO, is an internal medicine resident at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he held student leadership roles and contributed to medical education initiatives.
His early academic work included translational and community-based research, as well as service as a community health worker. He has presented original research at regional medical conferences and is a published author in global community health initiatives.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Alnounou served in a clinical leadership role at a large urban testing center in Chicago. He helped expand access to care for underserved populations and contributed to public health data reporting.
His clinical and research interests center on gastroenterology, with particular focus on gastrointestinal bleeding, liver disease, alcohol-related gastrointestinal pathology, and inpatient GI outcomes. He plans to pursue fellowship training in gastroenterology and a career integrating clinical care with outcomes-focused research.
