Biren A. Shah, MD, has been named the new chair of the Department of Radiology at WMed.
Dr. Shah, who also serves as the medical school’s assistant dean for Career Development, will begin his new role effective May 1, replacing Brandon Tominna, MD, who served for several years as a founding co-chair of the department.
“Radiology is one of two community-based clinical departments within the medical school,” Hal B. Jenson, MD Dean Robert G. Sawyer, MD, said. “Over the years, the department has served to enhance student interest and preparedness for the discipline. We extend our thanks and appreciation to Dr. Tominna for his leadership over the years.”
Dr. Shah is a board-certified breast imaging radiologist with the Detroit Medical Center and a professor in the Department of Radiology at WMed. He also hosts the WMed Specialty Spotlight podcast, a monthly podcast that explores the various specialties in medicine through interviews with physicians from those disciplines.
He is an alumnus of the University of Michigan and earned his MD degree from the Sackler School of Medicine/New York State – American Program Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv, Israel. He completed his radiology residency in Diagnostic Radiology at William Beaumont Hospital and a fellowship in Breast Imaging at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Shah's clinical interests are radiology resident/fellow education, medical student education in radiology, and clinical breast imaging research.
In the clinical setting, Dr. Shah serves as the section chief of breast imaging at Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Sinai-Grace and Huron Valley-Sinai Hospitals. He has been heavily involved with many professional medical organizations and held leadership roles at numerous local, state, and national professional organizations, including the Michigan Radiological Society, Saginaw Valley Radiological Society, the Young Physician Section of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS), and the Resident and Fellow Section of MSMS.
Additionally, Dr. Shah has served as a consultant on the Radiological Devices Panel of Medical Devices Advisory Committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since 2010 and he previously served as the associate program director of the DMC/Wayne State University (WSU) diagnostic radiology residency program and fellowship director of breast imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University Health.
Dr. Shah is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging.
